A Model Release Form is a contract between an artist and a model. It gives an artist legal permission to license, edit, publish, or distribute images or video of a model for promotional use or to sell commercially.
A model is someone whose image appears in the art. The model doesn't need to be a professional. Once the Model Release Form is signed, the model releases any claims or rights they have to the images unless specified in the contract.
The artist is often a photographer or videographer.
A Model Release Form is also known as a/an:
- Model release
- Model and entertainment release
- Standard model release
- Artist release form
- Photography model release form
Signing a Model Release Form is optional in Australia. However, it's in the artist's and model's best interest to sign a release before the photo or video session occurs, regardless of whether the model is paid or unpaid. In this case, a verbal agreement is difficult to enforce.
The release protects the artist from liability and licensing claims that may come up in the future. It also assures the model that the artist won't use the images for any unintended purpose.
If the model is under 18, a parent or guardian must give consent by signing a Model Release Form on their behalf.
An artist needs a signed Model Release Form if they wish to:
- Sell images that feature a recognizable person.
- Use photos for promotional use or advertising.
For example, an artist may wish to sell photographs to a magazine or website. In this case, everyone appearing in the photo must sign a Model Release.
Instances where a Model Release Form is option include:
- Images used for educational purposes only
- Photos of people attending an event as part of a news story
It’s a good idea to have a Model Release Form when you’re unsure about the future purpose of an image.

1. Choose a Model Release template
We have two Model Release templates to choose from:
- One-time form
- Reusable template
The one-time form lets you insert the artist’s and model’s information into the document. This form is good for artists who know who they’ll be working with and only need a single Model Release Form.
The reusable template saves the artist’s information but leaves a space for models to provide their information later. This form is convenient for artists working with many models.
You can use a Model Release Form for photos, videos, or both.
Popular examples of photo modelling include print advertising, stock photography, and clothing modelling for magazines, websites, and social media accounts.
Videography modelling is more common for television commercials, instructional videos, and online brand promotions.
3. Provide the artist’s details
The artist can be a photographer or videographer who captures the image of the model. It’s also possible for the photographer or videographer to work on behalf of a corporation. In that case, the corporation is considered the artist.
Provide the artist’s name, address, phone number, and email in the Model Release template.
4. Provide the model’s details
The model is the person whose image the artist captures. The model doesn’t need to be a professional or paid to sign a Model Release Form.
If you’re using the one-time Model Release template, provide the model’s name, address, phone number, and email. If the model is a minor, also include the name of the parent or guardian who will be signing the release on the minor’s behalf.
5. Include additional clauses
Include any extra clauses you wish to include in the Model Release Form.
For example, the model may not wish to associate themselves with sensitive themes or subject matter. This may include content related to crime, drugs, politics, sex, or any other subject matter that could be considered offensive.
6. Select a pocket-sized release if needed

7. State the signing details
If you know the date and city where the parties involved will sign the Model Release Form, include this information.
A Model Release Form doesn’t need a witness for it to be legally binding. However, it’s a good idea to have one if the terms of your agreement are ever challenged.
