Appeal Filed in the Case of the $54 Million Pants
You may have heard about the lawsuit involving a judge suing his dry cleaners for $54 million after they lost a pair of his pants. Judge Roy Pearson earned international notoriety and a fair amount of ridicule for pursuing this suit, but seems intent on winning.
Pearson lost his case back at the end of June, but on Tuesday, he filed an appeal. Undoubtedly, this will earn Pearson even greater ridicule, from ordinary people and legal professionals alike. In fact, a quick search turned up blogs referring to Pearson as completely insane, and a nutcase.
While Pearson isn’t ready to let this case go, the Chung family who own the dry cleaning business he sued, seem ready to leave it behind them. On Monday, they withdrew their motion to have Pearson compensate them for legal fees and loss of revenue resulting from the lawsuit.
According to Law.com, Chris Manning, the Chung’s attorney, released the following statement:
“The Chungs have done everything possible to put this nightmare behind them and return to their normal lives. They have won resoundingly at trial, raised donations from gracious private donors to pay for their litigation costs, let Mr. Pearson off the hook for personally paying their expenses and extended an olive branch to Mr. Pearson in hopes that he would end this matter and not appeal.”
Manning added that Pearson has chosen “desperate irrationality over common sense and decided to appeal, unnecessarily costing the parties more wasted time and the D.C. taxpayers more wasted money.”
Whether the courts will allow Pearson’s appeal is yet to be seen.
